In
1970, Tucson Mayor Lew Davis signed a proclamation making June 13 "Los
Changuitos Feos Day" in Tucson.

A
group photo from the early 1970s.Although Father Rourke had left Tucson in the
winter of 1969, the group continued under the direction of Arthur Pepin as
musical director and Father Butler as chaplain and organizer.

The boys travelled
extensively--more than 30,000 miles one year. They traveled by chartered bus,
plane, and train to points in Mexico, California, San Diego, Los Angeles,
Fresno, San Francisco, Chicago, Milwaukee, Dayton, New York, Washington D.C.,
Houston, Louisville, El Paso, and so on. Their accomplishments include: Performances
on national television in the U.S. and Mexico, including a CBS special,
"The Mission and the Mariachi" Performances
for the presidents of Mexico and the U.S. Concerts
at the Universities of Utah, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Texas-El Paso,
Arizona, and Arizona State A
concert with Trini Lopez at the half-time show of the first Fiesta Bowl
(nationally televised) The
opening entertainment for the 1972 American Health Congress in Chicago,
before 10,000 delegates The
annual "Viva Mexico" celebration at Disneyland Performances
on stage with Johnny Cash, Tito Guizar, the King Family, Fess Parker, Gary
Puckett, Andy Williams, Lawrence Welk, and others By the early 1970s, Los
Changuitos Feos had their first three stereo albums, Los Changuitos Feos
de Tucson, The Young Mariachis, and Fiesta in Tucson (available for
collectors) and took first place in 1971 and 1972 at the Fiesta de la
Placita, an international mariachi contest begun in 1971 that included
professional groups from both sides of the border. |

Fred
Tarazon also served as musical director of the Changos in the 1970s. Around
1977, Mr. Joe Mendoza assumed directorship of the group. He was director for
the next 24 years, until December 2000, when he retired.This photo was taken in
the 1990s, and shows Mr. and Mrs. Mendoza.
El señor Fred Tarazon también fue director musical de los
Changuitos por unos años en los 1970s. Alrededon 1977, el señor Joe Mendoza se
hizo el director del grupo. Fue director por 24 años, hasta el año 2000, cuando
se retiró. Esta foto se tomó en los 1990s, en ella aparecen el Sr. Mendoza con
